Planning for the project is well underway, with the facility to be located at a site already earmarked for development of a private hospital, approximately 300 metres from the current St John of God Midland Public and Private Hospitals campus.
The hospital will provide a full-service standalone private hospital experience, offering comprehensive medical and surgical services, some of which will be offered for the first time in the region.
The new 17,000m2 facility will include 96 overnight inpatient beds including a six bed critical care/high dependency unit, 24 bed (plus six chairs) short stay and day procedure unit, four general theatres, two procedure rooms and a cardiac/vascular catheter laboratory.
St John of God Health Care Group Chief Executive Officer Bryan Pyne said the project demonstrates the organisation’s commitment to boosting hospital, allied health and community services for an ever-increasing population.
“In addition to continuing to deliver public services in the soon-to-be-expanded St John of God Midland Public Hospital, the new St John of God Midland Private Hospital will offer greater choice for the community at their doorstep, with a wide range of medical and surgical services including interventional cardiology,” he said.
“In particular, interventional cardiology services will be a first for the region, meaning many patients with heart diseases will no longer be required to travel long distances to receive care at a tertiary hospital.
“We are committed to continuing to provide the highest standard of private health care services in a contemporary facility to meet the future needs of private patients. The new private hospital will, in effect, more than double private bed capacity in Midland and the surrounding area.
“The project will be delivered swiftly, to meet the existing high demand for private hospital services at Midland and minimise the gap in the provision of these services when the current private hospital facilities cease operation in 2026.”
Subject to relevant approvals, commencement of site works is scheduled to begin in 2024.

BACKGROUND
St John of God Midland Public and Private Hospital (SJGMPPH) opened in November 2015, replacing the old Swan District Hospital. The investment demonstrated a commitment by the WA State Government to enhance public hospital services to the eastern suburbs of Perth and the wider Wheatbelt region.
The co-located campus includes the 307-bed St John of God Midland Public Hospital and the 60-bed St John of God Midland Private Hospital. The private hospital beds are configured into two, 30-bed wards.
In June 2023, the State Treasury triggered their contractual right to purchase the 60 private beds for public patient use, effective from 1 July 2026. This will result in the current hospital campus becoming a fully public 367 bed public hospital in the 2026/2027 financial year.
