New national appointment to head up nursing at St John of God Health Care

St John of God Health Care has appointed Cynthia Dowell to the role of Group Director Nursing, with responsibilities across the group’s 23 health care facilities including 17 hospitals, disability services and home nursing in Australia and New Zealand.

Cynthia joins Australia’s largest Catholic and not-for-profit hospital operator from St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne where she was most recently the Chief Nursing Officer/ Executive Director Surgery and Specialist services with professional responsibility for more than 2,000 nurses.

At St John of God Health Care Cynthia will lead the Nursing Leadership Group made up of senior Directors of Nursing from the group’s largest and specialist hospitals.

Nurses and midwives are a critical component of the workforce at St John of God Health Care with 44 per cent of its 13,500 people employed to provide direct nursing care to its 290,000 patients and clients each year.

The national role will be responsible for building the capacity of the nursing workforce with a focus on evidence based decision making. It will also develop a culture of enquiry within the nursing workforce through research, professional development and training.

SJGHC currently partners with 26 universities and 30 registered training organisations to train nursing, medical and allied health students.

Cynthia’s qualifications include a Bachelor of Nursing from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, and a Professional Certificate in Health Systems Management. She has completed the Williamson Victoria Community Leadership Program.
