Doctor named Western Australian of the Year
St John of God Subiaco Hospital Neurologist
Professor Bill Carroll was recently named Western Australian of the
Year in the Business and Professions award category, recognising
his noteworthy contributions to medicine, in particular research
for Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
Announced at the Western Australian of the
Year Awards Gala Presentation Night, the awards are presented to
people who represent the “best of the best” and deserve the State’s
highest honours.
Professor Carroll, who has been based at the
hospital since 1981, is a leader in his field and specialises in MS
research and treatment. He was instrumental in establishing
MS Research Australia (MSRA) and is a board member for the research
body.
He has dedicated more than twenty years of his
career to research efforts focused on finding a cure for MS, as
well as improving the management of the disease, and has been
actively involved in advocating for and raising the awareness of
research efforts.
Professor Carroll, who assists patients at the
hospital with their MS diagnosis and treatment on a daily basis,
said he was delighted with the award and hopes that this accolade
would further raise the profile of MS research and
treatment.
“MS sufferers today face a much brighter
future thanks to the steps forward we have been able to make, and
we need to continue our efforts to improve their quality of life,”
Dr Carroll said.
His nomination for the award came from the MS
Society of WA and the MSRA. Both groups felt that Professor Carroll
had significantly raised the profile of MS, has a clear vision for
MS research and was committed to sharing his information so that
others may benefit from it.

Kelly said that the hospital is very proud of Professor’s Carroll’s
achievements and felt that he was a well deserving winner of the
award.
“It is great to see one of our longest serving
and well respected medical specialists being recognised by the WA
community,” Dr Kelly said.
