Latest news: Focus on Endoscopy

April 2013

A highlight of the Murdoch redevelopment is the construction of a the largest standalone Endoscopy Unit south of the river.

Due to open in August this year, the new unit is located under the existing Day Procedure Unit in the area previously used as an undercover car park.

The Lower Ground Floor location belies a light and airy design, which will provide a pleasant working environment for our caregivers and welcoming area for patients and visitors

In addition to an additional procedure room (a total of four) the free standing unit will also commence admitting and recovering their own patients, featuring a dedicated discharge lounge.

In addition to existing Endoscopy caregivers, additional Registered Nurses, graduate Enrolled Nurses and Patient Care Assistants have been recruited, with more ENs, RNs and volunteers expected to join the team soon.

The new unit will also feature improved service arm pendants positioned above the floor directly at the acute point of care supporting improved patient access.

Rear view at the forefront of construction

Although from the front doors, there is little evidence of our redevelopment, however a tour of the back quarter of our campus reveals incredible change.

From the emergence of the Wexford Medical Centre as it makes its presence felt on Barry Marshall Parade, to the lift cores and cranes of the New South Wing, it’s hard to imagine that less than 3 years ago, this was unused land and a ring road.

The Theatre, CSSD and ICU expansions are carefully being curled around the eastern end of the building, with new cooling towers and plant rooms also underway.

In the lower ground floor, a new home for Pharmacy is nearly complete, with new Theatre change and Pastoral Services underway.

On the ground floor, caregivers have been working alongside our builders as part of a staged approach to DPU refurbishment as the department is transformed by the new bright interior designs.
