Murdoch recognises quiet achiever

Gynae Oncologist Dr Yee Leung was last night recognised as St John of God Hospital Murdoch’s Doctor of the Year for 2011.

Murdoch CEO Peter Mott said Dr Yee Leung was much loved by his patients and colleagues at Murdoch and had been described as “a great surgeon and a man of great integrity and compassion”.

“Dr Leung has always shown  a strong dedication to his patients, families and the hospital over many years, and he is a most worthy recipient of our 2011 St John of God Hospital Murdoch Doctor of the Year,” said Mr Mott.

Profile: Dr Yee Leung

Dr Yee Leung was born in Singapore and moved to Perth at the age of eight. He completed his degree at UWA in 1983, and following his internship at Sir Charles Gardiner, he worked as a resident in gynaecology, paediatrics and the diploma of obstetrics at the Mildura Base Hospital in Victoria. He also spent two years with his young family in Canada where he completed fellowship training in Gynaecologic Oncology.

Dr Leung was first accredited to Murdoch in 1996 and worked at the hospital until earlier this year.

His current roles include:

  • Professor of Gynaecologic Oncology, School for Women’s & Infants’Health, UWA
  • Head of Department, WA Gynaecological Cancer Service
  • Lead Clinician Gynaecological Oncology, WA Cancer and Palliative Care Network
  • Director of Surgical Education, KEMH
  • Clinical adjunct lecturer / mentor, Notre Dame University

Dr Leung is an investigator in an international multicentre randomised trial to investigate the Laparoscopic Approach to Hysterectomy in the management of Cancer of the Endometrium, and has been an associate investigator or collaborator in 12 other studies.

He has been published both as an individual and as a collaborator of the Australian Ovarian Cancer Study Group, and has been invited to be a guest speaker at a number of conferences.

Dr Leung is significantly involved in medical education, with roles as clinical mentor, convener, facilitator, senior lecturer, and PhD supervisor. He is also on the Council of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
