Inpatient service

Referrals can be accepted directly from the patient's doctor, or any staff member involved in the patients care. Seeing the dietitian can allow dietary education in regards to the current condition, along with assistance with menu planning while in hospital. The dietitian works with the diet monitors, kitchen, doctor, nurses and all other care staff to ensure that nutritional needs of the patient are met. Recommendations for home will also be discussed and if the patient wishes, they are able to be followed up as an outpatient, for ongoing nutritional care.

Outpatient service

Anyone is welcome to attend Dietetic Outpatients, including past patients, prospective patients and individuals from the wider community. No referral is necessary.

We also offer a specific Gastroenterology Dietetic Outpatient service, consulting directly from the Surgery Centre. This allows patients who have seen a gastroenterologist to undertake comprehensive dietary education, specific to their needs.

The cost for the service is $65 for the initial consultation and $50 for review. This is rebatable through private health cover, depending on individual level of cover. Medicare may fund a limited number of consultations for people with a chronic condition who have a team of health professionals involved in their care. This is under an Enhanced Primary Care Plan and a full referral from a GP is required. DVA patients also require a full referral from their GP.

To make an outpatient appointment to see the dietitian, or simply to discuss the dietetic service within St John of God Hospital Geelong, please call our dietitian directly on 5226 1363.
