Cardiac services

St John of God Hospital has a particular focus on cardiac
services.
We offer:
Coronary Angiography
- Coronary Angiograms
- Cardiac Stents
- Coronary Angioplasty
The hospital has a Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory, which
enables patients to have a Coronary Angiogram locally rather than
in Melbourne.
A Coronary Angiogram is a sophisticated x-ray
of the heart where a dye is injected to see if coronary arteries
are narrowed or blocked. Depending on what the Coronary Angiogram
shows, narrowed or blocked coronary blood vessels can be opened up
(dilated) either by inserting a tubular hollow wire to hold the
vessel open permanently (called a Cardiac Stent) or by inflating a
balloon within the vessel to dilate the area of narrowing and then
removing the balloon. This procedure is called Angioplasty.
Patients are treated by specialist cardiologists, nursing
caregivers and technicians fully trained in these coronary
procedures and with a comprehensive understanding of coronary heart
disease. Referrals to the specialist cardiologists are organised by
your doctor or specialist.
New - Chest Pain Centre
GPs are now able to refer privately-insured
patients experiencing cardiac conditions to St John of God
Hospital’s new Chest Pain Centre, where they will be seen and
treated immediately upon arrival.
Patients can be referred by their GP or a paramedic, thus
avoiding potentially long delays in an emergency department.
