SW CC and Cancer Service
South West Coronary Care Service and
Cancer Service at
St John of God Bunbury Hospital
Care Closer to Home
Cancer and Chronic Heart Disease represent the
two leading contributors to death and the burden of disease in
Australia.
The South West of Western Australia is the 3rd
fastest growing region in Australia, home to about 150,000
people.
Every year close to 3,000 of those people are
admitted to hospital with acute heart disease, and more than 700
are diagnosed with cancer.
With a higher proportion of people over 50
years of age than the broader state population, demand for cancer
and coronary care services in the South West is expected to
continue rising.
People in the South West deserve the same
treatment and chance for survival and recovery as people in
Perth.
St John of God
Bunbury Hospital will now deliver high quality cardiac and
cancer investigation and treatment services for both public and
private patients.
These new service will increase capacity,
technology and facilities, attracting new resident medical
specialists as well as creating local jobs for nursing, allied
health and support staff.
The specialised heart facility will be Western
Australia first ever regional coronary care unit. It will be
complemented by a state-of-the-art cardiac angiography suite, and
plans are also underway for the creation of a cardiac
rehabilitation service and an acute chest pain service.
The Comprehensive Cancer Centre, the first of
its kind in regional Western Australia, will extend the range of
specialised services, such as chemotherapy, palliative care and
renal dialysis, already offered by St John of God at the South West
Health Campus.
The new Coronary Care Unit and Comprehensive
Cancer Centre will enable us to care for more public and private
patients each year, and treat more seriously ill patients, saving
them and their families the stress of long and often repeat
journeys to Perth.
St John of God Foundation has undertaken a
fundraising Campaign in order to raise a minimum of $5 million for
the establishment and support of these centres.
